Yet, the release of “The Women’s Health Study” has Upland health professionals reminding their clients that fish represents more than just a lean source of protein – but also a valuable protection against disease later in life.

According to the 10-year study of 40,000 female health professionals, women who consumed canned tuna, salmon, sardines and “dark meat fish” once per week had a 40 percent lower risk of developing Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) than their non-fish-eating peers. Furthermore, women who ate the most EPA and DHA omega-3-fatty-acids (several times a week) had a 40 percent lower risk than women who consumed the least amount of fish (once a week).

Age-related Macular Degeneration is a vision problem that makes it harder to read, drive, or recognize faces. Your vision appears dim or fuzzy, objects may look smaller or warped, and there appears to be a blind-spot in the center of your vision. The precise cause of AMD is unknown, but factors like age, high blood pressure, smoking, race and gender appear to play a role.

According to the latest statistics, there are 1.75 million Americans with AMD.  While the overall percentage of the 40+ population with the degenerative condition is only 1.38 to 1.55 percent, statistics show that more than 15 percent of white women over 80 have neovascular AMD. With a rapidly aging population, it’s estimated the number of people with AMD will increase by 50 percent to nearly 3 million in 2020.

Eating one serving of dark meat fish like salmon or sardines is perhaps the best hope we have against degeneration, both mentally and physically. Interestingly enough, researchers did not find the same quality of risk reduction in people who consumed ALA, the omega-3 fatty acid found in soy, canola and flax oil.

Researchers Dian and Tom Griesel conclude: “Fish is well-recognized as a tasty, easy to prepare and nutritious food. Regular consumption of fish has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, macular degeneration and other significant diseases. It is definitely worth trying to eat at least 2 servings per week to obtain all the possible benefits.”
